Ski & Snowboard Instructor Training Sessions

in Hakuba

Last year we opened up our in-house instructor training sessions to the public in order to gauge demand and interest. Following its success, we have decided to add these sessions to our regular services for the foreseeable future. Please note that these are fun, informal sessions, in which no formal certification is given.

What are Instructor Training Sessions?

An intrinsic part of ski schools around the world, ski and snowboard instructor training sessions exist to continually improve both the riding and teaching of snow-sport instructors, ensuring that the highest level of instruction is consistently delivered to guests. It is a way for ski schools to frequently see that their instructing team are following both company and industry standards in their teaching methods, and at the same time keep the instructors engaged and motivated as they continually improve upon their personal riding. It may seem surprising that instructors also need to train and work on their technique - but even olympians have room to improve!

Other Training Details

The sessions are typically led by a senior instructor - that is, someone holding a very high certification and with many years of experience - and can vary in length from 30 minutes to a few hours. They are often focused around a specific skill or improvement area for the group as a whole, and then typically zone in on more individual feedback as the varying levels and improvement needs of each participant become apparent. One exercise may be given to the group as a whole, with slight adaptations in how it is carried out given to individuals.

Our training sessions differ from lessons in that they are designed for refining the technique of higher level skiers and snowboarders over a longer period of time, such as a season. They build upon an existing understanding of technically tuned skiing and snowboarding, and work on changing deep rooted habits over multiple sessions. We also cover new skills and movement patterns and reaffirm a solid grasp of the principles of skiing and snowboarding.

The sessions are informal, alongside instructors and other members of the public that choose to join. The maximum number of participants per session is 10, though typically most sessions have around 5 people in them. No qualification is given after one or multiple sessions, as the purpose of these are for self improvement, meeting other industry professionals and snow sport enthusiasts, and learning in a casual, group environment.

If you are looking for more personalised, intensive instruction - then one of our Private Lessons in Hakuba may better suit you.

Who can join?

Any instructor or non-instructor may join these sessions. The skier/rider must be advanced, which in this case means that you are able to ski all terrain on the mountain; while you may not ski them perfectly, you should be comfortable navigating a black run without any anxiety.

How do I join?

The nature of these informal sessions means that our rates are drastically lower than those of our private ski and snowboard lessons. We offer the first session for free - to discover if this is something that would suit your style of learning - and then you have the option to purchase a “Training Pass” that will allow you to book any 10 sessions over the season. You can choose which sessions you would like to attend based upon your areas of interest and your schedule. Upcoming sessions will be available to book on "Pick Time" two weeks ahead of time, highlighting who the trainer will be and what the session specific skill will be.

To get started, select your free session here on "Pick Time", or contact us with any comments/questions that you may have.
